Found in : East africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique.
 
Characteristic : 
  • Less curved backs and longer legs.
  • Moderate tufts of hair in the knee joints of males.
  • Manes are appear to be combed backwards. 
 
 

WEST AFRICAN LION

Other name : Senegal lion.

Scientific name : Panthera leo senegalensis
 
Found in : Western africa, from Senegal to Nigerai
 
Characteristic : 
  • Lives in packs.
  • Smallest among the sub-Saharan African lions. 
 
 
 

SOUTHWEST AFRICAN LION

Other name : Katanga lion.

Scientific name : Panthera leo bleyenberghi
 
Found in : Southwestern africa, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Katanga, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
 
Characteristic :
  • Largest lion of all the subspecies.
  • Sand coloured thick manes. 
 
 


ASIATIC LION

Other name : South Asian, Persian or Indian lion

Scientific name : Panthera leo persica
 
Found in : India(Gir Forest of India), Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh
 
Characteristic : 
  • A longitudinal folds of skin running along the belly.
  • The fur colour from ruddy tawny, buffish gray or sandy to heavily speckled with black. 
  • Moderate manes, their ears are always visible.
  • Endangered species.
 
 

CONGO LION

Other name : Central african lion.

Found in : Uganda, Northern eastern parts of Congo.
 
Characteristic :
  • Less leafy, dark manes in male congo lion.
  • Sand and dark brown fur colour.
 


TRANSVAAL LION

Other name : Southeastern African lion.

Scientific name : Panthera leo krugeri
 
Found in : Transvaal region of southeastern Africa(Kruger national park).
 
Characteristic : 
  • White colour lions in this variety due to mutation of krugeri.
  • Typical sand colour fur.
  • Black, well developed mane.

Found in : Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria.
 
Characteristic : 
  • One of the largest subspecies.
